Due to his traveling schedule, Srila Dhanurdhara Maharaja is unable to make this evening's sanga class. However, Maharaja has asked Mahamuni to speak on the six primary schools of Hindu thought.
From Mahamuni:
Greetings everyone,Dhanurdhara Maharaja asked me to give this Wednesday's talk, and provide an introduction to the six primary schools of Hindu thought. I think that the idea is that as he is discussing the Yoga tradition and applying its insights to our general sadhana, I should give some background of the key schools which have influenced the thought behind traditions like the Vaishnava Vedanta and similar schools. My plain is to discuss some of the key beliefs which they share, the key points of dispute, and what I take to be their decisive contributions to Indian thought. It may help to have a little list of the schools, so please note the following.
- Mimamsa (Interpretation): focus on scriptural interpretation, particularly of the ritual portion of the Veda, and philosophy of language. Root text: the Mimamsa sutras of Jaimini.
- Vedanta: focus on interpreting the Upanishads and Gita, and providing a coherent Brahman-centered metaphysics based on such texts. Root text: the Vedanta sutras of Badarayana (Vyasa)
- Samkhya (Analysis): focus on identifying the fundamental features of reality under the most basic categories, generally in support of meditational practice. Samkhya thought generally pervades many other schools, and Samkhya ideas go back to the Upanishads and the Mahabharata. Root text: the Samkhya-karika of Isvarakrishna.
- Yoga (Spiritual discipline): focus on the psychology of spiritual discipline for the sake of meditational practice. Like Samkhya, it basic yoga notions pervade many of the other schools, and goes back to the Upanishads and Mahabharata. Root text: the Yoga-sutras of Patanjali.
- Nyaya (Logic): focus on the theory of knowledge, and logic. This school wants to defend the Vedic culture, the existence of God, and a basic realist picture of the world against competing schools like Buddhism. Other schools borrow from its logical theory. Key text: the Nyaya sutras of Gautama.
- Vaisheshika (Atomism): a realist school which defends a metaphysical picture somewhat different from the Samkhya. It becomes subsumed into Nyaya around 1000 CE. Root text: the Vaisheshika sutras of Kanada.
Generally the six schools are grouped into three sets of two sister schools, as above. Aside from these, there were influential Hindu schools like the Grammarian school, and non-Hindu schools like Buddhism, Jainism and Charvaka (the materialist tradition).
Thanks.
Muni

Sri Pariksit said: Arriving in Sivaloka, from a distance the sage Narada saw Lord Siva, Sri Hara, who had just finished his worship of Lord Sankarsana, Sri Hari. Entranced in ecstatic love, Lord Siva was dancing and loudly singing the glories of the Lord, while his associates played instrumental music and shouted "Jaya! Jaya!" With great affection he praised his assistants like Nandisvara, as well as the goddess Uma, who was expertly clapping her hands. The sight of all this delighted Narada. Vibrating his vena and nodding his head to show respect, he called out several times, "You are the greatest recipient of Krsna's mercy!" and in a sweet voice he recounted to Lord Siva everything just told to him by their father, Lord Brahma.

Sri Krishna Janmastami - The Appearance Day of Lord Krishna
Srimad Bhagavatam
Canto 10 Chapter 3 Text 1-5
TRANSLATION
Thereafter, at the auspicious time for the appearance of the Lord, the entire universe was surcharged with all the qualities of goodness, beauty and peace. The constellation Rohini appeared, as did stars like Asvini. The sun, the moon and the other stars and planets were very peaceful. All directions appeared extremely pleasing, and the beautiful stars twinkled in the cloudless sky. Decorated with towns, villages, mines and pasturing grounds, the earth seemed all-auspicious. The rivers flowed with clear water, and the lakes and vast reservoirs, full of lilies and lotuses, were extraordinarily beautiful. In the trees and green plants, full of flowers and leaves, pleasing to the eyes, birds like cuckoos and swarms of bees began chanting with sweet voices for the sake of the demigods. A pure breeze began to blow, pleasing the sense of touch and bearing the aroma of flowers, and when the brahmanas engaging in ritualistic ceremonies ignited their fires according to Vedic principles, the fires burned steadily, undisturbed by the breeze. Thus when the birthless Lord Visnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, was about to appear, the saints and brahmanas, who had always been disturbed by demons like Kamsa and his men, felt peace within the core of their hearts, and kettledrums simultaneously vibrated from the upper planetary system.
Balarama Purnima - The Appearance Day of Lord Balarama
Nectar of Devotion
Chapter 41: Fraternal Devotion
One devotee described the personal beauty of Baladeva as follows "Let me take shelter of the lotus feet of Balarama, whose beauty is enhanced by the earrings touching His cheeks. His face is decorated with tilaka made from kasturi [musk], and His broad chest is decorated with a garland of gunja [small conchshells]. His complexion is as white as an autumn cloud, He wears garments of blue color, and His voice is very grave. His arms are very long, touching His thighs, and He has shown His great strength by killing the Pralamba demon. Let me take shelter of this chivalrous Balarama."Baladeva's affection for Krsna is illustrated in this statement to Subala: "My dear friend, please inform Krsna not to go to Kaliya's lake today. Today is His birthday, and so I wish to go along with mother Yasoda to bathe Him. Tell Him He should not leave the house today." This shows how Balarama, Krsna's elder brother, took care of Krsna with parental love, within the scope of fraternal affection.

Hoping for the touch of His lotus feet, the goddess of fortune perpetually worships Him alone, leaving aside all others and renouncing her pride and fickleness. That He begs is certainly astonishing to everyone.
In tonight's sanga, Srila Dhanurdhara Swami gives a preview of next week's class for the conclusion of Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 10 Chapter 23: The Brahmanas' Wives Blessed.
Text 33
TRANSLATION
It is by hearing about Me, seeing My Deity form, meditating upon Me and chanting My names and glories that love for Me develops, not by physical proximity. Therefore please go back to your homes.
Text 34
TRANSLATION
Srila Sukadeva Gosvami said: Thus instructed, the wives of the brahmanas returned to the place of sacrifice. The brahmanas did not find any fault with their wives, and together with them they finished the sacrifice.
Text 30
TRANSLATION
Our husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, other relatives and friends will no longer take us back, and how could anyone else be willing to give us shelter? Therefore, since we have thrown ourselves at Your lotus feet and have no other destination, please, O chastiser of enemies, grant our desire.
Text 31
TRANSLATION
The Supreme Personality of Godhead replied: Rest assured that your husbands will not be inimical toward you, nor will your fathers, brothers, sons, other relatives or the general populace. I will personally advise them of the situation. Indeed, even the demigods will express their approval.
Text 27
TRANSLATION
It is only by contact with the self that one's vital breath, intelligence, mind, friends, body, wife, children, wealth and so on are dear. Therefore what object can possibly be more dear than one's own self?

You should thus return to the sacrificial arena, because your husbands, the learned brahmanas, are householders and need your assistance to finish their respective sacrifices.
Text 24
TRANSLATION
Lord Krishna, who witnesses the thoughts of all creatures, understood how those ladies had abandoned all worldly hopes and come there simply to see Him. Thus He addressed them as follows with a smile upon His face.
Text 25
TRANSLATION
[Lord Krishna said:] Welcome, O most fortunate ladies. Please sit down and make yourselves comfortable. What can I do for you? That you have come here to see Me is most appropriate.
Text 12
TRANSLATION
When the brahmanas failed to reply even with a simple yes or no, O chastiser of the enemy [Parikshit], the cowherd boys returned disappointed to Krishna and Rama and reported this to Them.
Text 13
TRANSLATION
Hearing what had happened, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Lord of the universe, simply laughed. Then He again addressed the cowherd boys, showing them the way men act in this world.
Text 10-11
TRANSLATION
Although the ingredients of sacrificial performance -- the place, time, particular paraphernalia, mantras, rituals, priests, fires, demigods, performer, offering and the as yet unseen beneficial results -- are all simply aspects of His opulences, the brahmanas saw Lord Krishna as an ordinary human because of their perverted intelligence. They failed to recognize that He is the Supreme Absolute Truth, the directly manifest Personality of Godhead, whom the material senses cannot ordinarily perceive. Thus bewildered by their false identification with the mortal body, they did not show Him proper respect.
Text 7
TRANSLATION
Lord Rama and Lord Acyuta are tending Their cows not far from here. They are hungry and want you to give Them some of your food. Therefore, O brahmanas, O best of the knowers of religion, if you have faith please give some food to Them.
Text 8
TRANSLATION
Except during the interval between the initiation of the performer of a sacrifice and the actual sacrifice of the animal, O most pure brahmanas, it is not contaminating for even the initiated to partake of food, at least in sacrifices other than the Sautramani.
Text 5
TRANSLATION
Thus instructed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the cowherd boys went there and submitted their request. They stood before the brahmanas with palms joined in supplication and then fell flat on the ground to offer respect.
Text 6
TRANSLATION
[The cowherd boys said:] O earthly gods, please hear us. We cowherd boys are executing the orders of Krishna, and we have been sent here by Balarama. We wish all good for you. Please acknowledge our arrival.
